An under ground aquaponic concept

With weather going from 115F in the Summer to 20F in the Winter I have been concerned about insulation and maintaining a consistent temperature.  By insulating and placing a large portion of the tanks under ground I may be able to control the water temperature.

Below is a concept drawing of what that might look like.   There would be a covered opening over the sump tank which would also provide access to plumbing.

  • The sump tank contains the pump which will operate 100% of the time without a timer.
  • Water from the sump tank is poured into the fish tanks.
  • Then into the settling tank using a bottom pickup tube not shown here
  • As water is pumped into the fish tanks it seeks the level of the spill tube which runs to the grow bed.
  • The water percolates through the grow media filling the grow bed
  • When the water reaches the height of the siphon it is dumped into the sump tank as clean water.  

An idea I have for a buried system

Some of the features I like in this design are:
  1. Reduced exposure to UV will help prevent damage to the polyethylene IBCs
  2. One pump design with no chance of pumping the fish tanks dry
  3. Well insulated
  4. Looks very clean with most of the mechanical system hidden underground
  5. Easy to add additional grow beds

Some features I dont like are:
  1. Plumbing is more difficult to access
  2. Grow beds are low to the ground
  3. Periodic cleaning of the bio filter may require significant effort
  4. The initial cost of digging the hole
  5. Possible problems from ground water (our water table can raise in the rainy season.)

Aquaponic grow room

Ive begun to build my grow room inside my shop.
Over the years I have saved materials from various construction jobs.
So far all of the materials have been free.
As the project progresses I will add new photos.

Today I established a 30 gallon tank by using water and gavel from my existing pond.  Water is clearing slowly, but the real test will be when I check to see how well its handling the ammonia.

UPDATE:  
Here is something interesting.  The bacteria in my pond filter failed to quickly establish a biological bacteria in my new filter.  I added (about 8 cups gravel in a 30 gallon tank) At first I thought the bacteria either went dormant or died in the winter, but when added to ammonia to the established system quickly converts to nitrate so it must be that it more inoculant  is required.

Aquaponic Chemistry

I did a water test of my ponds chemistry this morning.

From left to right PH=8.0, Ammonia=0, Nitrite=0, Nitrate=0, Phosphate=5
The pond has been established for about 7 years and is pretty much care free.

It always surprises me is now low my Nitrate levels are.  Its a 1300 gallon pond containing about 70 pounds of fish which I feed 20 oz of food to every day.   The Nitrates are being consumed by about a dozed 1 gallon plants in a stream (NFT - Nutrient Film Technique).

It might be because this pond has been established for so long, but it never needs any adjustments.  I let the PH ride on the high side because its more about being a Koi Pond, and the garden is just a benefit rather than a product.

My Other systems are relatively new, and Im attempting to find a balance between fish and plants.  The PH buffering has been a difficult obstacle, and I may reduce the amount of rock in these systems to see if it becomes less of an influence.


My newest system is a combination of gravel bed and raft.  Im beginning to prefer raft systems over gravel, but I like the idea of keeping a little rock in the bottom of the raft tanks.  If buffering continues to present a problem I will convert the gravel bed to a raft tank.

I plan to purchase a test kit for water hardness in order to make a better assessment of the buffering.   Ideally I would like to keep my PH at about 6.8 in order to promote iron uptake by the vegetation.

Aquaponic Square Foot Gardening

In 1981 Mel Bartholomew published his book "Square Foot Gardening," followed by a PBS show highlighting Mels technique for growing lots of plants in small raised-bed gardens. You can buy "Mels Mix" at national hardware stores, and Ive seen raised beds for sale everywhere from local nurseries to Walmart.

The Square Foot Gardening community has a huge number of blogs dedicated to techniques useful to anyone engaged in intensive home gardening. If youre doing aquaponics, you can skip the soil-related part. But the "when" and "where" of planting is still valid.

Since Im frankly a neophyte when it comes to gardening, I was thrilled to come across "My Square Foot Garden," a super cute website put together by a lady named Emily, who lives in my former home town, Lehi, Utah.

Emilys got a lot of nice information on planting at her site, and shes developed a "Planting by Color" system that explains when to plant seeds, set seed into the garden, etc., based on you spring and fall "colors." [Since she lives north of the equator, her system is currently geared towards summers that occur around July.] If you sign up for Emilys free newsletter, shell send you e-mails that prompt you when to start different types of seeds and when its safe to plant them outside.

Im a smart person. I know my USDA Growing Zone (7a) and I can read the fine print on my seed packets. But why figure it out for myself when other gardeners have already done all the leg work, particularly if theyre offering it for free! Now all I have to do is figure out how best to adapt their excellent advice to my aquaponic system...

Aquaponic Electrical Design


One thing I would pass on to those who are designing a new system is that you should have a minimum of three circuits, and plan for more than you expect.
Given loads are:
  1. Pump
  2. Lights
  3. Fan
  4. Air Stone Bubbler
Some extras are:
  • Secondary grow lights for duck weed or Azolla
  • Secondary air stone for duck weed
  • Extra plug for a vacuum cleaner
  • Tank lights
  • Air vents or evaporation cooler.
  • Room heater
  • Radio
  • Blender
  • Refrigerator
  • Computer
  • Deep fry

And even after planning for all of this you will probably find yourself adding new circuits and changing the locations of circuits after you begin using the system and discover better layouts, and stuff you never dreamed of.

Its been several months since I started using the grow room and many more circuits have been added.  Contrary to safe building code, I have also removed the GFIs because they tend to trip at the worst possible times, like while Im sleeping. 

I have also added lights to indicate when a circuit is on.   This makes it easy to see whats going on.
